TxAIRE Survey Flyer

A questionnaire (available in English and Spanish) on the home environment and child’s health will be handed out to parents of children in Northeast Texas through daycares, medical clinics, churches, and other agency contacts. Up to 4,000 children will be approached in order to obtain 200 cases (with asthma) and 200 healthy controls for Phase II of the study

TxAIRE representatives will disperse Surveys in a manner that represents the population of Northeast Texas.   Dr. Sundell has contacted administrators at Northeast Texas Public Health District, Director of Tyler Junior College Family Learning Center, and the Dirctor of the Texas Department of State Health Services.  All have agreed to assist with gaining  access to local daycare and health care facilities under their jurisdiction.

A TxAIRE representative will be availible at sites the questionaires will be distributed, in order to assist the participants with any questions or concerns  (Translation will be provided if needed).  In  the event a member of the TxAIRE team is not be availible to administer the survey, a staff member of each location will be designated and trained to adminster and collect the survey (questionaire).  The designee will maintain survey(s) in a secure location until a member of TxAIRE collects completed documents. 

Procedure for Administering the Survey:

  • Each participant will be given a survey (questionaire)
  • The proctor will read the script
  • Questions will be answered
  • Each participant will then complete the survey (questionaire)
  • All completed surveys will be returned to representative
  • Representative will place completed surveys in sealed envelope or box for transport to secure location.  

All completed surveys will be kept in a locked file located in Dr. Jan Sundell’s office until date of destruction in order to maintain confidentiality. 

Data Processing:

Data will be transferred to a computer, and being analyzed, using the SPSS statistical package, for associations between children’s health and home characteristics. Potential asthmatic cases and healthy controls will be contacted for inclusion in Phase II of the study.
